This special issue contains 17 papers separated into two groups: those which address water scarcity and the improved management of irrigated and dryland systems to increase water productivity and environmental consequences of those systems; and those that address the potential of increasing water productivity through increased yields with equivalent or reduced amounts of water. These papers provide an up-to-date view of the progress and prospects of increasing the water productivity of cropping systems and new ways of meeting the demand for food under scarce water conditions.
