This study, conducted in Egypt, aimed to: (1) modify the pivot irrigation system to be more suitable to irrigate trees and other crops under special conditions, (2) evaluate the modification system, and (3) reduce the investment costs of the modified system. The specific objective was to modify the sprinkler pivot to work as a moving surface irrigation system. Two different nozzle shapes (trapezoid and triangle) were selected with two different hose lengths (25 and 200 cm). Maize was planted under the pivot system. The modified pivot system was operated under a low pressure head (1.95 bar), and irrigation water was decreased by 16.8% compared with the sprinkler pivot system. The uniformity coefficient for the triangular-shaped nozzle was 91.6%. Long hoses were better than the short ones. Water use efficiency in the modified pivot system was 2.5 kg/m3, while in the sprinkler pivot system it was 1.84 kg/m3. It was found out that the modified pivot irrigation system reduces the hazard of chemigation. The investment cost of the modified system was lower compared with the sprinkler pivot system with little energy required for the modified pivot system. There was no significant difference between the two irrigation systems with regards to their effect on maize yield.
