Abstract:

The Brackish Water Project in the Southern Jordan Valley will assist extension workers and farmers by providing guidelines for the cultivation of agricultural crops under brackish water irrigation (ECiw 3 dS/m). Based on data from a local monitoring programme, and on international experiences, agricultural and irrigation guidelines for practical application on farms in the Southern Jordan Valley were elaborated covering:- irrigation water quality, crop and field water requirement, soil salinity and leaching, leaching requirement, irrigation management. In particular the guidelines covered recommendations for the cultivation of crops under brackish water irrigation such as: vegetables (squash, eggplant, tomato, potato, sweetcorn), leaf crops (parsley, rocket), cereals (wheat, barley), fodder crops (alfalfa).
