This paper discusses the importance of having suitable and scientifically proven programmes to establish an effective system of irrigation control in the Lower Amudarya basin of Uzbekistan. In order to succeed, these programmes will have to combine integrated engineering, organizational and economic activities including improvement of technical level of irrigation systems to generate the optimum regime of irrigation of agricultural crops, and application of economic mechanisms to water use. Data are tabulated on the relationship between irrigation land and specific water consumption in the Republic of Karakalpakstan and Khorezm region.
