Indigenous crop production in Sri Lanka is rapidly decreasing due to water scarcity problems associated with the cropping seasons. A subsurface pot irrigation system was introduced to a field grown Momordica dioica (Teasle Gourd or Thumba Karawila) to determine the effect of irrigation on the yield. Teasle Gourd is rich in calcium, phosphorus, iron and carotene and is in demand for export and for internal markets. The yield and development of Teasle Gourd cultivated under the designed subsurface irrigation system were compared with the yield and development of crop grown under rainfed condition and under manual irrigation during May to September 2005. The yield obtained from the crop grown under designed irrigation system was two times higher than the yield of crop grown under rainfed condition. Irrigation water consumption by crops under subsurface irrigation system was 1.6 times less when compared to manual irrigation. The designed pot irrigation system automatically controlled the water intake of soil when the soil was wet, so that crops grown under this irrigation system consumed less irrigation water and produced high yield.
