The Indian Government has constituted a task force on microirrigation (TFM) to intensify the adoption of drip and sprinkler irrigation. It was a bipartisan task force headed by the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Shri M. Chandra Babu Naidu. The report of the task force was published in January 2004. Based on this report the total surface water availability is estimated to be 1869 billion cubic metre (BCM) of which 690 BCM is utilizable. Microirrigation system is the key for sustainable water management and food and water security in India. Future projections for irrigation water and the need for water management in agriculture are given. Finally, the potentials of microirrigation in Gujarat state, are provided.
