Abstract:

Results are given of a survey conducted in 2001 on the use of centre pivot and lateral move irrigation systems in cotton farms in Australia. The survey involved a face-to-face survey of more than 80% of the 36 cotton growers using centre pivots and lateral moves. Data on the typical characteristics of centre pivot and lateral move machines are tabulated. Charts are presented on: (1) the increase in crop water use efficiency (in bales/ml irrigation) for cotton irrigated by centre pivot and lateral moves compared with the traditional surface systems; and (2) the difference in water applied by growers using centre pivots and lateral moves when compared to fully irrigated surface systems.
