Abstract:

A study was conducted in Coleambally demonstration farm (Australia) in the spring season of 2002 to assess the performance of rice and subsequent crops on raised beds, and to compare the production on raised beds with that on the conventional flat lay-out. The treatments were: flooded rice on flat lay-out; flooded rice on raised beds; furrow-irrigated rice on raised beds; and subsurface drip-irrigated rice on raised beds. Flooding was done in raised beds up to 14 days before panicle initiation. The average grain yields for the flat lay-out, flooded beds, furrow-irrigated beds and sub-surface drip-irrigated beds were 13.1, 10.7, 10 and 8.7 t/ha, respectively. Water use efficiency in the flat lay-out was 0.70 t/ML, followed by 0.59 t/ML in flooded beds, and 0.58 t/ML in furrow and drip irrigated beds. The total rice biomass in the flat lay-out, flooded beds, furrow and sub-surface drip irrigated beds was 2805, 2132, 2138 and 1991 g/m2; and harvest index was 0.44, 0.43, 0.43 and 0.41, respectively.
