Abstract:

A study was conducted in Poland to assess the effect of methanol solution (10, 20, 30 and 40% with florovit 0.4% and glycine 0.2%) and supplemental irrigation on the performance of tomato cv. Betalux, cucumber cv. Cezar F-1, bean cv. Igolomska, sugarbeet cv. Colibri and winter rape cv. Lirajet. The plants were treated 4-5 times during June-July at weekly intervals. In the laboratory, 20-day-old winter rape plants were treated with the methanol solutions combined with 0.2% glycine. Supplemental overhead irrigation was applied at 70-80% field capacity. Irrigation and methanol treatments positively affected photosynthesis. Irrigation increased carbon dioxide assimilation and transpiration rates. Methanol solutions increased nitrate reductase and alkaline phosphatase activities by 50 and 32%, respectively, compared to the control. Methanol increased drought resistance, carbon assimilation and biomass production, and resulted in yields almost similar to those obtained under irrigation. Bean, sugarbeet, tomato and rape plants treated with 30% methanol solution yielded 12-30% higher than control plants.
