This special issue addresses a wide range of economic and policy issues involving use and/or conservation of water. The countries represented are Australia, New Zealand, Italy and Spain, but most papers have an Australian focus. Issues addressed include: market-based water allocation approaches; community concerns over declines in water quality; trade-offs between economic and environmental outcomes from water management; water pricing; water allocation between competing uses; the impacts of water markets on third parties; variability in water supply; urban water demand; and policy options around water rights.
