Abstract:

A renewable water supply is required for sustained irrigated agriculture. Irrigated agriculture can remain productive indefinitely with assurance of water supplies and infrastructure to deliver water as needed for crop production. Emerging issues facing designers of irrigation systems are competition for limited and declining water resources, climate variability, effects of leasing water during drought years on annualized water costs, environmental concerns, refined irrigation scheduling, and drainage and salinity control issues. Designers of irrigation systems must consider the role of irrigation in food production, and the productivity of water used for irrigation.
