The effect of surface drip irrigation on yields of chosen vegetable crops cultivated in very light soil.

An experiment was conducted in Poland, during 1991-2000, on carrot (Daucus carota), red beet [beetroots] (Beta vulgaris), snap bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), winter squash (Cucurbita maxima), zucchini squash [marrows] (Cucurbita pepo), radish (Raphanus sativus subvar. radicula), and iceberg lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. capitata) to evaluate the potential for producing high-value vegetable crops grown in loose sandy soils and irrigated with surface trickle system. Trickle irrigation was most efficient for carrot and iceberg lettuce production. The highest water use efficiency was 233 and 212 kg of yield increasing per 1 mm of applied irrigation for carrot and iceberg lettuce, respectively. Irrigation decreased the nitrate content in the edible parts of the vegetables. The results showed that vegetable production on sandy soils was only possible with the use of supplemental irrigation.
