In response to water resources shortages in the North China plain, various projects connected with the control of Haihe River have been carried out, including:- (i) flood drains, (ii) removal of excessive surface water and saline groundwater, (iii) use of rainwater for soil leaching and desalinization, (iv) developing supplementary irrigation and drainage (v) regulating groundwater depth, (vi) comprehensive control of drought, waterlogging, salinity and saline groundwater, and the (vii) control of secondary salinization. A large area of saline-alkaline land has been improved.
