Federal flood maps are outdated & climate change will only make them more so. The Obama administration has created the 3-D Elevation Program: a multi-agency program utilizing the LIDAR (Light Detection & Ranging) System which uses a series of airborne lasers to create a hyper-detailed 3-D map of the U.S. so precise it can detect the height of a median on a road. More accurate data on the elevation & slope of fields could lead to precision agriculture that maximizes the use of nutrients & reduces runoff of chemicals.
