FARMINGTON — Their hearts sunk with the river. For farmers and ranchers across San Juan County, the early summer of 2013 was more than parched. It approached a crisis. “About one month ago, we were ready to make a call on the river,” said Tommy Bolack, owner of Farmington’s B-Square Ranch. The ranch takes water from a number of ditches included in the San Juan Agricultural Water Users Association. “We had to go to our cattle (pastures) by the Jersey Jim Allotment near Mancos (Colo.) three weeks later than usual,” Bolack said. “That caused us some problems.”
