Water wars: Arapahoe County snaps up farm water rights in northern Colorado

Arapahoe County has purchased the rights to thousands of acre-feet of agricultural water in northern Colorado, marking its first foray into the region and adding another chapter in the battle between farmers and cities for future water security. “That’s definitely one aspect in all of this in which you have to be concerned,” said Brian Werner, public information officer with the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District — a public agency that distributes water to portions of eight counties in northeastern Colorado. “When you start getting the big dogs from the Denver area in your backyard, it starts to get a little scary.”..
